Two suspected cattle thieves were allegedly killed by a vigilante group on Thursday in Kombili village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau.
The suspects, together with others, were alleged to have invaded the village to rustle cattle but met stiff resistance from the vigilante of the village.
A witness said that the rustlers came to the village around 2.00 a.m. and succeeded in moving the cows from the house of a respected resident.
The witness said the suspects were moving away with the cows when members of the vigilante accosted them.
“When the suspects discovered they were rounded up, they opened fire on the vigilante, who repelled the attack and gunned down two of the rustlers. The rest managed to escape, leaving behind the corpses of their colleagues.”
Another witness who pleaded anonymity, described the incident as “a break through” considering the rampant cases of cattle rustling in the area.
The Divisional Police Officer of Mangu Divisional Police Station, Mr Blacky Agbelaje, who confirmed the incident, said the police were yet to ascertain whether the suspects were cattle rustlers.
He, however, said that the police were investigating the incident to ascertain the true status of the victims.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Plateau Police Command, Mrs Felicia Anslem, said she was yet to get details of the incident, adding that the command was expecting details from station.
