An elderly woman and a 7-year old boy were trampled to death and another kid was injured by wild elephants in a remote hill area under Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Md Sajib, son of Zobera Begum of Bhagyakul area and Dilwara Begum, 60, of Lunchhara area under Sualok union in Sadar upazila while injured Sadham, 04, was sent to Lohagara hospital.
Sajib's family members, who escaped the attacks, said that a herd of wild elephants entered the compound of their house in the early hours and killed their son on the spot.
Later the elephants went to Lunchhara area adjacent to Bhagyakul and trampled Dilwara to death on the spot.
Villagers said, a herd of elephants invaded the areas around 1.30am. They made an attempt to drive away the elephants with the help of torches. But the herd chased Sajib and Dilwara and crushed them to death in the early morning.
Sadar upazila chairman Abdul Kuddus, who went to the spot, said at least 30 families from Bhagyakul and Lunchhara areas left their dwelling houses in fear of attack by wild elephants. They have now returned home, he added.
He also said that paddy fields, several hundred banana trees and more than 10 dwelling houses bore the brunt of the attacks by the wild elephants.
The people of the affected areas expressed the fear of fresh attack as the elephants were still roaming in the area.
Two groups of wild elephants, consisting 15-16 in each, were seen in the nearby hills, said locals.
