A woman was killed and another person injured in elephant attack in different parts of the district on Wednesday. The woman identified as Palo Baipai (30) belonged to Jurabaga village while the injured Trilochan Barik (67) hails from Nuwapara.
According to police, while Trilochan was plucking flowers, an elephant picked him up and threw him on the ground.
While Trilochan sustained severe injuries in chest and waist, the elephant went back to nearby forest through Chingriguda village. In the afternoon, the elephant entered TRL-Krosaki officers’ colony.
Though the security guard of the company and Forest officials chased the elephant back to the forest, it was again spotted near the colony in the evening. At 8.15 pm, the same elephant crushed Palo with its feet on the road near Jurabaga leaving her dead on the spot.
On Tuesday night, the tusker had destroyed many houses in Lakhanpur block and injured Kunu Khedia of Samarbaga panchayat.
Belpahar Ranger DC Jeet said steps have already been taken to monitor the movement of the tusker. As it is very close to Lakhanpur jungle, the elephant may come in search of food again, he added.
