Alexandra police arrested a 21-year-old man caught ''red-handed'' poaching on a Central Otago farm after a farmer noticed the man gutting a deer on his property.
Acting detective senior sergeant Liz Williams, of Alexandra police, said the farmer heard a gunshot about 4.50pm on Monday and found two poachers on his farm gutting a deer.
He called police who waited near the poachers' vehicle until they arrived and arrested the man for theft.
The man's firearms and the deer were also seized.
The second person present during the incident was a 16-year-old female.
''What is especially gratifying about the arrest is the fact the farmer contacted police while the incident was happening, which enabled police staff to attend and catch the offender quite literally, red handed,'' Mrs Williams said.
Further charges were likely and police would be seeking to revoke the man's firearm's licence.
