A local man is facing thousands of dollars in fines and court costs after allegedly shooting two turkeys out of season.
“We could not have made this case without the cooperation of the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office and the community,” said Wildlife Enforcement Officer Charles Hinson. “This is an example of what can happen when everyone works together.”
David Keith Whitehead, 33, is alleged to have shot two turkeys with a borrowed shotgun on a farm off Blackwell Road. Hinson said Whitehead attempted to retrieve the birds, but became frightened by several people passing by and left the scene.
The witnesses called law enforcement, and were able to provide enough details that Hinson and other officers tracked Whitehead down. The incident occurred Thursday.
