Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) officers apprehended four suspects in a poaching operation near La Poile late last month.
Paul Barter, field supervisor with DFO’s Port aux Basques office, said the four were apprehended on June 23.
“Based on intelligence we’ve gathered over the years from anonymous complaints, we increased patrols to the area,” said Barter.
The officers found nets along the coastline near La Poile that used a pulley system. Based on that find, they started Operation Pulley and conducted a 48-hour surveillance of the illegal nets.
The officers apprehended four individuals and seized four illegal nets, an 18-foot boat with motor, 11 salmon and one trout.
Charges have not yet been laid and the investigation is ongoing.
