Rugby legend Frik Du Preez came out strongly against the poaching of South Africa’s rhinos on Saturday, 24 August.
Speaking at the stopover of the New Holland Rhino Run at McCarthy Toyota’s Lynnwood Road Showroom, Mr Du Preez is of the opinion that all South African citizens should band together and make it impossible for Rhino poachers to operate in the country.
Sharing the stage with Frik was Professor Cobus du Toit of the SA Veterinary Foundation. Prof Du Toit stated that Rhino poachers and dealers in rhino horn fall into the same basket as those who are involved in drug and cigarette smuggling. The Professor suggested that all South Africans should send a very strong message to countries such as Vietnam where rhino horn is openly marketed, by boycotting their products found on the shelves of shops in this country.
Prof Du Toit and Du Preez have thrown their weight behind New Holland tractors project to raise funds for Africa’s first specialist, dedicated, non-commercial centre to care for baby rhinos at the Wildlife & Cultural Centre within the grounds of Legend Golf & Safari Resort near Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) in Limpopo. The Orphanage forms a vital part of the Rhino Response Strategy National Rescue and Response network.
