Reporting live from teh [sic\ conference,
In a surprising off the cuff speech, President Khama of Botswana opened the AFrican Elephant Summit in the capital Gaberone with the flllowing words which brought tears to the eyes of delegates at the African Elephant Summit in Gaberone Botswana with a powerful speech
”Africa’s Human and natural resources have been pillaged and plundered for generations by people from far off lands. From slavery to archaeological artifacts, minerals, fauna and flora The continent and its people have for so long been victims of other continents selfish interests, and today it is continuing. Human trafficking today is slavery. Minerals in some countries are being exploited and the people of the countries are not getting the full return or benefits. And now also our elephant ivory and rhino horn are going to countries where they are used for God knows what! Only to satisfy ridiculous outdated beliefs whilst we remain with carcasses as proof we once owned these magnificent animals”
His speech was given on day 2 of the African Elephant Summit, a conference organized by the IUCN and hosted by the Botswana Government, that has brought together 13 African Elephant Range states, as well as donors and NGO’s to discuss urgent measures to halt the poaching of elephants in Africa.
