Farmers in Kisumu county have petitioned the government over the rising cattle rustling and killings. The farmers are complaining of huge losses they incur following the increase of livestock theft. The most affected areas are Nyakach, Nyando and Muhoroni.
They accused the police in the three subcounties of doing little to address the crime. Last week, more than 15 cattle were stolen in Nyando, Muhoroni and Nyakach. However, Nyando DC Joseph Satia said that eight of the stolen cattle have been recovered.
Speaking to the Star on the phone yesterday, Satia said the animals were recovered in the sugarcane plantation. John Otieno, a farmer in Nyakach, said they have searched the county's major cattle auction markets in vain.
He said they suspect the cattle are transported to neighbouring counties. "The animals are transported with cars at night through roads despite the police traffic and check points," Otieno said. Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor said the rustling is hurting the county's economy.
