Conservation groups in the Maasai Mara game reserve have decried the killing of elephants in the park. Led by Narok Wildlife Forum Cordinator Nicholas ole Morero, they said that if the trend continues it will affect tourism in the country.
Last week poachers killed an elephant at the Heritage Mara Conservancy and took the tusks.Addressing the media in Siana Spirngs yesterday, Morero said the poachers should be arrested and prosecuted.
He said the Kenya Wildlife Service has not sensitised the communities living near the reserve on the dangers of poaching. Government spokesman Muthui Kariuki said in a statement during the weekend that they want to fight poachers at all levels to save elephants.
Morero asked the government to move fast to end poaching. He said there is need to take quick and decisive measures.“A concerted effort is needed by all concerned players to end poaching which has the potential to kill tourism,” Morero said.
