A joint team of crime branch officials and local wildlife sleuths on Tuesday raided three hideouts of a poacher, who is famous with the name of Sharma, at his native place Dharampur in connection with the seizure of a panthers skin in Mohali.
Sharmas name came to light following the interrogation of Ajit Pal Singh of Phase VII, Mohali, who was arrested for selling a panther skin for Rs 2.50 lakh to a decoy customer at his house on December 16. Singh is in judicial custody. He had said he procured the skin from Sharma around eight months ago.
Sub-inspector Charan Singh of crime branch said following a tip-off, a head constable under the garb of a decoy customer was sent to his house for purchasing the skin. Singh had fixed Rs 5 lakh as its price, but later told the customer that he could buy it for Rs 2.50 lakh. Singh confessed that he had sold three panther skins earlier and that Sharma, too had one, the SI added.
Meanwhile, investigators have decided to take permission from a local court to destroy the skin as it was in a bad condition.
