Pakatan Rakyat has accused the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry of misleading the public about Anson Wong, alleging that it was in cahoots with the wildlife smuggler.
In furnishing documents, including a utilities bill, that linked Wong and his wife Cheah Bing Shee to recent illegal wildlife trades, PKR vice-president N Surendran said such operations could not continue without the authorities' complicity.
"Who is paying whom to make Malaysia the centre of illegal wildlife trade?" he asked during a press conference at the party headquarters here, this morning.
Also present was DAP strategist Ong Kian Ming.
Dubbed the Lizard King, Wong - who had been previously incarcerated for wildlife crimes - has once again come into the limelight after an expose by Al Jazeera that revealed he was still involved in wildlife smuggling.
Surendran said the authorities must also “stop bluffing” the people in regards to denials they issued, including one by the National Parks and Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) on Rona Wildlife.
Perhilitan had, in insisting it had revoked all trading licences issued to Wong and Cheah, said their checks showed that Rona Wildlife was registered to a Radamani Govindan, while Wong was “not listed as an owner, shareholder or board member of the company”.
A Rona Wildlife employee had in a video Surendran produced today admitted that Wong was the “boss” and the electricity bill only reinforced the notion that the store – which is registered under Cheah – was a front for Wong and his illegal wildlife operation.
Perhilitan had also stated that physical inspection and compliance checks on the premises were conducted regularly. More....
