It was disheartening to see the picture of venison being put up for sale in open market in Ukhrul, close to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The news report on the extensive scale of poaching in the district, has lucidly presented the ongoing scenario of how the people of Ukhrul have responded to wild life conservation and also the insensitivity of the concern authority. Selling of wild animals and wild fowl is a daily business here. You’ll never pass a day without noticing a wild species being put up for sale at one of these stalls. Such is the magnitude of wild life trade in this part of land. And seemingly no one is bothered about this massive scale of illegal activities. Through your esteemed paper, I would like to urge the concern district authority and other social organisations to kindly educate the people of Ukhrul, of how harsh our environment would be should we annihilate all the wild species. Needless to pinpoint our accusing fingers towards a particular person(s) or authority or organisations for this Himalayan blunder that we are committing everyday. It takes everyone’s effort to stop this kind of illegal activities and perhaps let’s show our benign nature to God’s wonderful creation! My only appeal to the district authority is to kindly take the initiative of enforcing the law of the land and act like a real authority and not like puppet.
