Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said Indian fishing vessels which cross the International Maritime Boundary Lines (IMBL) of Sri Lanka and Indian vessels fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters illegally will be confiscated,.
He said that strict measures will be taken against Indian vessels poaching in Sri Lankan seas. The Minister said that accordingly fishermen who come in these vessels will be released and the vessels which they use to cross the IMBL to Sri Lanka will be confiscated.
The Minister explained that fishing communities living in Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Trincomalee and Puttalam have to face various problems due to the Indian fishermen poachihg in Sri Lankan waters and harvesting the fishing resources belonging to our fishermen. He said that because of that Sri Lanka has decided to follow the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea. Accordingly, the fishermen who enter Sri Lankan territorial waters will be released and their fishing vessels will be confiscated.(niz)
