A 64-year-old man from Nicosia was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of poaching and for allegedly assaulting two police officers by pushing one into a ditch and attempting to hit him with a rock, and punching the second
During a vehicle patrol in the village of Koshi in the Larnaca district, police officers saw a car moving in the opposite direction to traffic. When the 64-year-old driver was signaled to stop, he accelerated and continued driving.
At some point the driver slowed down and the woman passenger opened her door, threw an object off the edge of the road into a ditch after which the car kept going, police said.
Police said they retrieved a freshly-killed hare from the spot where the car had slowed.
The vehicle was stopped by officers a little further down the road, and when the 64-year-old was told he was being arrested for poaching, he and the officers became embroiled in a tussle. He allegedly hit one policeman in the chest and during the scuffle with the other, they both tumbled into the ditch.
The suspect then allegedly tried to hit the officer with a rock but it was taken away from him.
In the meantime, the woman, who was said to be foreign, ran away.
The two police officers and the suspect were treated at First Aid at the Larnaca general hospital.
