A suspect who was arrested in connection with rhino poaching in KaNyamazane east of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga is expected to appear at the local magistrate's court on Monday.
Police arrested the man last Friday while conducting a routine operation around KaNyamazane.
Police ordered a car with five occupants to stop, but the driver sped off. A chase ensued and the car was eventually forced off the road.
Police arrested one man, while the other four suspects fled and are still at large.
The police also found a point-303 rifle and some ammunition.
Besides Mpumalanga , KwaZulu-Natal has lost 70 rhinos this year and about 700 of these animals are killed country-wide.
Chris Galliers of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) believes poaching syndicates are gaining momentum.
