It was with great shock when I heard that two white rhino were poached (killed) for their horns on Rietvlei Nature Reserve a few weeks ago. There has been a dramatic increase in the rhino poaching this past year, with more than 500 rhino being killed for their horns in Zimbabwe and South Africa the past 12 months alone!
I still can’t believe that a human being with a brain can kill such a beautiful prehistoric looking animal just for a small piece of compressed hair on their heads. The horns are supposedly used for medicine and dagger handles in the east and far-east.
A big worrying factor is that in a majority of the poaching activities it is a syndicate committing these brutal acts, using helicopters and darting (overdosing) the rhinos with game capture chemicals.
We need all the major conservation bodies and experts, with the financial help of some big companies, to sit together and formulate an action plan to stop the poaching now…..extinction is forever! More....
