Though the poaching case where four men tried to sell leopard skin near Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) officials has put the forest officials on their toes, the latter insist that it is impossible to poach from within the park. TOI spoke to the chief forest conservator of SGNP, Sunil Limaye to check the security measures taken to increase vigilance.
According to Limaye, the security has been increased. There have already been forest guards patrolling the forest in the night. With the onset of the fire season, where there is lot of foliage and chance of fire increases, there will be more guards patrolling the area. However, Limaye insisted that it is not easy to poach animals from SGNP. "There are too many people around. Also, there are more people patrolling the area compared to other regions. The forest has, till now, been very safe for animals," said Limaye.
The officer said that the police need to interrogate the culprits as to where they killed the animals. "If the leopards were killed inside the park, their carcass would be found. These things can't go unnoticed for a long time," he added.
