Six rhino poachers were arrested and two AK – 47 rifles recovered after the killing of a rhino and wounding another in Naboomspruit (Mookgopong). The rhinos were allegedly shot at at Tamboti Floodland Farm in Naboomspruit on 03 April 2013, one was killed and both horns dehorned while the other rhino survived the attack and is recuperating from two bullet wounds.
The killed rhino was discovered on Saturday and intensive police investigations led them to the arrest of two suspects in Noboomspruit the following day (Sunday). An AK47 was confiscated during their arrest.
Further police investigations the same day, led them to an additional four suspects at Soshanguve in Gauteng were another AK47 was also seized. Police also recovered and R46 000 cash from the suspects. The suspects, who are all foreign nationals, are aged between 32 and 34.
They are expected to appear before the Naboomspruit Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Further police investigations continue.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo has applauded the good and speedy work rendered by SAPS members which led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the firearms. He reiterated that police are vigilant in Limpopo to deal with rhino poachers at all times.
