Two Rhinos have been killed in Tsavo in yet another incident of increased poaching in the region.
The Rhino and its calf were shot dead early last week at Mukururo area outside the Chyulu Hills National Park boundary by poachers who made off with the horns. According to a statement by the KWS, the criminals escaped towards Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
Sources told the Star the calf is one year old while the mothers age was not revealed.
KWS rangers have been deployed in the area to pursue the suspects while security has been beefed for the few Rhinos left in the area.
Last month, Tsavo Conservation area won a Sh70 million grant instal state-of-the-art camera traps that will help stop the massacre of rhinos and elephants.
Early this year, a Black Rhino died after it was caught by a poachers snare at Chyulu area.The Rhino was spotted after its pictures were relayed to the KWS systems by the surveillance cameras.
Last year, a meeting in Nairobi that brought together representatives of the conservation community from across Africa heard that the demand for Rhino horns is said to come from several Asian countries, where rhino horn is purported to cure cancer and other diseases. More....
