Wildlife Alliance’s Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT), acting on a tip off to Wildlife Alliance’s wildlife crime hotline, intercepted avehicle smuggling reptiles in eastern Cambodia headed for Vietnam. Upon searching the vehicle, the team found 104 reptiles including 73 rat snakes, 18 water snakes, 11 monocled cobras, 1 python and 1 king cobra. The smuggler was charged with illegally transporting rare wildlife under Cambodian law and fined nearly $10,000 US. The following day all of the reptiles were released into protected areas. The summer months in Cambodia see a sharp rise in wildlife poaching as the end of the monsoon causes widespread flooding. The flooding forces animals to congregate in dry areas concentrating them and providing easy targets for poachers. Wildlife Alliance is a partner of the USAID-funded ARREST Program (Asia’s Regional Response to Endangered Species Trafficking), the U.S. Government’s largest counter wildlife trafficking program which is implemented by FREELAND.
