World Forum on Snow Leopard Conservation was postponed to October. State Environment and Forestry Protection Agency Director Sabir Atadzhanov informed 24.kg news agency.
According to him, forum was postponed from mid-September to the end of October due to SCO summit in Bishkek. “All the forum preparations go according to the plan. Kyrgyzstan was entrusted with organizational issues and the World Bank will pay the rest of the forum expenses,” Sabir Atadzhanov said.
He added that at present there are 250-280 snow leopards in the Kyrgyz Republic. “Poaching still exists, but we are toughening penalties, particularly, we have already increased fines. One must pay 600,000 soms for head of a snow leopard. I think this sum is impressive. Fines for illegal shooting of wild sheep, bears (up to 500,000 soms), and wild mountain goats (from 15,000 to 55,000 soms) were also increased. Number of poaching cases reduced after introduction of such measures, but, unfortunately, not all poachers know about the changes. Not only illegal hunting, but also animals’ migration and human factor influence the magnitude of population,” Sabir Atadzhanov noted.
As it was earlier informed, the main aim of the World Forum on Snow Leopard Conservation in Bishkek is the support of national priority actions of 12 countries in the habitat of snow leopard, strengthening of international cooperation in the wild animal conservation.
In course of the forum it is planned to adopt global program on snow leopard conservation for 7 years (till 2020).
