The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has announced the successful transfer of 100 Nubian Ibex (70 female and 30 male) to the Wadi Rum Nature Reserve in Jordan.
The animals are endangered in the region and will remain in a controlled environment to adapt to the new habitat before their final release into the wild.
The transfer was done under the Nubian Ibex Reintroduction and Release Programme, an initiative by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
The release programme supports the UAE’s efforts in encouraging the conservation of wild species in their natural habitats.
Only a limited number of the ibex remain in the mountainous areas of the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum due to illegal poaching and the destruction of the animals’ natural habitats.
