Follow the advice of the Bulgarian Tourism Ministry and your hunting holiday in the country could be a lot longer than anticipated. On brochures handed out at the Green Days Festival in Sophia the ministry highlighted shooting bears and deer as an option. The problem is bears are protected and sentences of up to 3 years can be handed out.
The Green Days Festival was held on Sunday and during the day the Bulgarian Ministry of Tourism was advertising Bulgaria as a grizzly bear and American deer hunting and salmon fishing destination. The brochure was produced for the English speaking visitors to the festival.
The Balkani Wildlife Society though pointed out that the first 3 pictures in the brochure are all of protected species in the country and hunting is not permitted.
Responding to questions from the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) a ministry official admitted that the brochure was used and an investigation is now underway as to why protected species were used to promote hunting holidays.
The Balkani Wildlife Society point out that this is not an isolated incident as many web sites of hunting operators will use pictures of bears and wild cats despite these being protected from hunting.
