Rajnagar Mangrove and wildlife Division DFO Kedar Kumar Swain today directed all range officials to deploy the anti- poaching and anti- depredation teams to check poaching during the new year.
Mr Swain said the direction was given as rare migratory birds visiting the Bhitarkanika National Park during this period were killed by the poachers.
The hunters also kill deer, wild boar and sambar to celebrate the new year.
Forest sources admitted that poaching is going on unabated at the forest of Rangani, Pravati, Kantiakhai, Barahapita and Subarnapur.
Mostly poachers from Khamarsahi, Budadiha, pravati, Gupti, Jarimula of Rajnagar block and Charadia, Kainthakhola and Chandanipal area of Bhadrak district used to enter into these forest for poaching by remaining hand in glove with some of the unscrupulous forest officials .
The poachers sell the meat of wild boar in black market at the rate of Rs 220 per kg, the venison at Rs 280 and illegally export the skin of the wild boar, sambar and spotted deer to West Bengal.
The DFO said he has directed 10 river forest squads, 14 anti-poaching squad and 17 anti depredation squad to remain alert to prevent possible poaching by the poachers in the sanctuary area on the eve of the Christmas and New year .
Mr Swain said anticipating visit of a large number of tourists to the National Park around the new year Kendrapara Superintendent of Police was requested to deploy police personnel at Talachua and Gupti entry points for a hassle free visit of tourists to the National Park.
