Elephant in room: San Diego Zoo Global’s African bush elephant program has earned the zoo, along with Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, a top award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
In 2003, the two zoos airlifted 11 elephants targeted for elimination in Swaziland due to overpopulation. They were transferred to zoos in North America.
A decade later, all eight female elephants and two of the three males have reproduced, resulting in 14 elephant births and much-needed diversity.
